Safety Specialist

Our Safety Specialist implements manage and monitor safety programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable requirements. The Safety Specialist occasionally directs several aspects of the work while gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Are you up to the challenge of being in Safety?

What you will be doing:

  • Assists Safety Manager to implement the Company Safety Program to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment
  • Supports and encourages safe and productive behavior while providing feedback to employees on safety practices
  • Conducts comprehensive on-site safety assessments of projects as part of a constant monitoring process and monitors corrective actions taken
  • Inspects company facilities to detect existing or potential hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated; follows up to ensure measures have been implemented
  • Maintains safety policies and/or strategic objectives to reduce incidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards through various mediums (including, but not limited to)
    • Safety training of company employees
    • New employee orientation
    • Emergency preparedness
    • Planned inspections
    • Job observations
  • Develops Job Hazard Analyses (JHA’s) and Toolbox Safety Talks in compliance with Company safety policies and current safety issues.
  • Changes and educates project personnel to effectively conduct on-site, weekly toolbox talks.  Tracks and reports to Managers on weekly toolbox talk participation.
  • Prepares various forms of written communication (including, but not limited to)
    • Company newsletter articles
    • Policy development
    • Site-specific safety plans
    • Procedures and correspondence
  • Maintains safety files and records.
  • Complete safety information on job Pre-qualification forms.
  • Guides field employees, project supervisors, and management on matters concerning employee health & safety, public safety, and environmental issues and regulations.
  • Maintains a customer focus while on jobs to ensure all customer safety requirements are being met or exceeded
  • Stays current with technological developments, laws, regulations, standards, codes, products, methods, and practices related to hazard controls
  • Share duties and backup responsibilities with the HR/Safety Team, including backup for the front desk receptionist as needed.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in Occupational Safety & Health or related degree required.
  • 2 years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • OSHA 30 certification required (or must obtain within first 6 months of employment).
  • Certified in CPR/First Aid required (or must obtain certification within first 6 months of employment).
  • This position requires the employee to drive a company vehicle.  The employee must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record that allows the company to ensure such individuals are under the company’s insurance policies.  The employee must also carry auto liability insurance.  The employee will be subject to the Company’s policy concerning company vehicles.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • OSHA 502 training certification preferred.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.
  • Skill in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with OSHA safety standards.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Skill in developing safety procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
